And it was not just servitude. A slave had no rights whatsoever. She could be used, abused, mistreated, punished or assaulted in any way her owner desired, and no one would care. There were laws to safeguard the welfare of animals, but none to protect the slaves. As the auctioneer announced, they were "legal for all purposes".
